Fernando del Paso Mexican wins Cervantes Prize for Literature 2015 – El Diario de Yucatan

         


     

MADRID (Notimex) .- The Mexican writer Fernando del Paso was the winner of the Cervantes Prize for Literature, the highest award in Spanish letters, said here today the Minister of Education, Culture and Sports, Inigo Mendez de Vigo.

The jury highlighted the contribution of the changeover to the development of novel combining tradition and modernity. “His novels full of risk recreate episodes in the history of Mexico making them universal,” he said in the report.

In an event at the Spanish Ministry of Culture, which was part of the jury Mexico Enrique Krauze, Mendez de Vigo announced the winner of the most prestigious prize for Literature in Spanish language, endowed with 125,000 euros.

Just two years ago, in 2013, the Cervantes prize went to a Mexican in that case the writer, of French descent Elena Poniatowska Amor.

From the first time I was given, in 1976, Mexicans have achieved this prestigious award, along with Del Paso and Poniatowska, are Octavio Peace, in 1981; Carlos Fuentes, in 1987; Sergio Pitol in 2005 and Jose Emilio Pacheco in 2009.

The award recognizes the figure of a writer, who with all their work has helped to enrich the Hispanic literary legacy.

In this edition 2015, coinciding with the 400th anniversary of the birth of Miguel de Cervantes, the jury recognized the work of the Paso, who as Cervantes, has managed to add the tradition, history and modernity.

Del Paso, who also writer is a draftsman, painter, diplomat and academic, is especially known for three large novels that are considered some of the best exponents of Mexican narrative of the twentieth century

These are: “Jose Trigo,” which won the Xavier Villaurrutia Award in 1996; “Palinuro of Mexico” which won the Romulo Gallegos, Mazatlan Prize for Literature in 1982 and 1988 Award “News of the Empire”
