The American artist James Turrell, a pioneer in the use of light in his creations, and the German violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter are among the 40 candidates . 21 nationalities vying for the Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts, which will fail tomorrow in the Spanish city of Oviedo

Last year the award went to the American film director Francis Ford Coppola after previous editions were awarded the architects Frank Gehry and Rafael Moneo and film director Michael Haneke.
