Employees of the National Gallery end their indefinite strike since August

London, (EFE) .- The workers of the National Gallery in London, the most prestigious art gallery in the UK, today announced an end to the indefinite strike that began in early August for privatization security services and attention to the visitors.

The PCS union said that it has reached an agreement to “protect” employees and thanked the new director of the gallery, Gabriele Finaldi, former head of the Museo del Prado, his “commitment to genuine negotiation.”

The planned privatization will continue, but “has reached an agreement with Securitas company that ensures protection terms and conditions “of workers and has also agreed to the reinstatement of the union representative Candy Udwin, dismissed in connection with the dispute.

The agreement also includes the PCS union recognition within the company and the provision of a “minimum income” for additional workers to offset the high cost of living in London, the rest of the UK.

“We continue to believe that privatization was not necessary, but still work together with the new company and the gallery to ensure that the transition is orderly and so more importantly, that proper standards of this world-class institution remain, “said union general secretary, Mark Serwotka.

The National Gallery, free entry to the pubic, is the second most visited museum in the UK, with 6.4 million visitors a year, behind the British Museum, which receives 6.7 million each year.

On Wednesday, the gallery will open the largest exhibition of portraits of Spanish painter Francisco de Goya (1746-1828), which will be open until January 10. EFE
