Moana: the sea of adventure – GQ

From a few years ago, the people have expressed their anger with the image of the woman who Disney has been proposed. The parents, especially women, ask new heroines that offer you an idea of femininity more contemporary.

since The little Mermaid (1989), there was a clear evolution, because Ariel is the first one when he sings don’t you want to love (but "knowing much more") and is the first one that saves the Prince. Bella (Beauty and The Beast, 1991) prefer to read than to marry the handsome of people, and Jasmine (Aladdin, 1992) choose to leave the comforts of the palace to discover the world. Is Pocahontas (1995), who prefers to be single to go with John Smith. Jane, who lives in free union with Tarzan (1999), and of course Mulan (1998), who was the most revolutionary to dress up as a man and go to war.

A decade later we are introduced to Tiana (The Princess and the Frog, 2009) whose dream is to open a restaurant; Rapunzel (Tangled, 2010) whose power is two female symbols: the pan and the hair; the radical Merida (Bold, 2012), who fight for their right to not marry, and finally the very famous sisters Frozen (2013), who portray two archetypes opposites of women, both accepted and not judged.

The expectations of Moana are great, what can offer a new heroine if there was already two warriors and a queen, who does not need a man to rule? But its directors in fact, they created The little Mermaid Aladdin and The Princess and the Frog, and you can clearly see the influence of these and other films that it would be impossible not to remember.

Moana is the daughter of the head of the community (such as Ariel, Jasmine and Pocahontas) and his biggest desire is to go sailing the sea, as Ariel, Beauty and Jasmine) but, of course, their parents, who only want to protect her, you are forbidden to pass the limits of the reef (such as Triton). She should be happy where you are and take your place as the new head of the village (there is no need of a man to assume the office, as in Frozen). The need of Moana out is only understood by his grandmother, who serves as a spiritual guide (as in Pocahontas). So the teen is encouraged to escape, not only for their personal benefit, but because he wants to fix the problems of the Island: The legend says that the demigod Maui stole my heart the Goddess You Fiti and with it creativity. That makes the nature is revealing in disasters. Moana found in the sea the heart of Te Fiti and is willing to give it back, but to do this you must find to Maui (Dwayne Johnson).

The dynamics of the pair-off is similar to that of Tangled or The Princess and the Frog: she has a clear goal and is the brain of the computer, he is vain and opportunistic, but it changes character on its way (also, he has a painful past). Due to the mythology of the story—Gods, demigods and symbolism—the tape also reminds a little of Hercules (1997), but what is different here and all the previous movies, is that the demigod and the human not fall in love with. And the lesson they both learn is that although it is better to work in team, truly the demi-god does not need the gods or their weapons, and the girl does not need to the demigod. Both are backed up with deep conversations, by bringing together, advising, discussing and teaching what they know. The two learn to go to the past and to solve it (as Simba), in The Lion King, 1994), reminiscent of where they come from a nd who are their ancestors (as in Mulan) and this is how they return to their essence. Only in this way will continue.

After so many princesses and movies is difficult for certain issues—that also are characteristic of Disney—do not repeat, and maybe that would be the weakness of Moana, is also applauded that the company always proposes something new. Here there is simply no love story, nor the conflict is in charge of that. And with that Disney proves that the romance is not necessary for you to connect with the characters, it is not necessary to make us vibrate and put on the skin, chinita, it is not necessary for us to cloud the eyes of the emotion, it is not necessary to live a great adventure.

Technically, the animation of the Moana is superior. The clarity of the sea, the landscapes and the details are impeccable. Highlights the music scene "Shine" in which everything becomes fluorescent. The side-kick are a little piggy tender of little importance and a cock-crazy, without connection with reality, which takes the audience laughter. It is worth to mention the sea, a character metaphor that shows us how the universe conspires sometimes to our favor, sometimes against us, but it has a higher power with which we can connect, even if we do not like their designs. And, finally, the music in Disney has always been decisive. The company chose the new genius of the musical Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator of the Broadway hit, "Hamilton." The soundtrack , which achieved along with Mark Mancina (composer of the Score for Tarzan and < em>The Lion King), it will be clearly a classic, the songs hits insurance, and the main theme, "How far I’ll go", will be the new anthem.

Moana is mainly directed to fans of heart of Disney (which you will find hidden in the scenes to Sven, the reindeer from Frozen), that compliment the stamp of the institution and that are open to be surprised. Moana may not have the strength Frozen in his message, nor is it so revolutionary, and lacks the charisma of the characters of The little Mermaid (there is also a song equivalent to "Under the Sea"), but in an era in which the tapes animated are cynical or sarcastic just to get to the heart of the adults, Moana continuing with the traditional way, but very efficient to get to the heart of the child within us.
