Placido Arango donated 25 works to the Prado – The Economist

The businessman donated in 1991 to the museum 80 engravings of Goya of the “Caprichos” series.

Madrid, Esp The businessman Plácido Arango Arias donated 25 works of ancient art from the collection of the Prado Museum, between highlighting pieces of Francisco de Zurbaran, Pablo de San Leocadio, Francisco de Goya, among other great masters.

The Royal Board of the Prado Museum approved Tuesday unanimously accept the donation, entitled to life estate of these works to be exhibited gradually in the Madrid museum, and a first selection of 10 will be presented on 7 July in the premises.

The Chairman of the Board, José Pedro Pérez-Llorca, and the director of the Museo del Prado, Miguel Zugaza, announced the donation, the second makes the Mexican-Spanish entrepreneur, after 80 engravings of Goya of the “Caprichos” series donated to the museum in 1991.

The owner of Conservation and Research of the Museo del Prado, Miguel Falomir said the reason that this donation is exceptional is because the works “cover gaps” on the Museum on some painters and reinforces the presence of other .

He noted that work is in good condition and most are foreigners or Spanish painters settled in Spain and correspond to a period from 1528-1825.

Zugaza said that a selection of some 10 of the 25 works will be exhibited from 7 July in the different rooms of the museum, as the school, the period or the author to which they relate.

Clarified the Arango Arias himself asked that no presentation ceremony is not conducted with assistance in the museum, so it also will be a room dedicated to this donation, but 25 works will be exhibited gradually, and at the conclusion of the usufruct will pass part of the collection of the Prado.

Arango Arias was Chairman of the Trustees of the Prado Museum from 2007 to 2012 and its management promoted the rescue and the specialized treatment of numerous paintings.

The donation is part four of Goya lithographs, which the museum complete printed work of this painter, as well as 21 paintings by artists such as Zurbarán, Luis de Morales, Pablo de San Leocadio, Eugenio Cajés, Luis Tristan, Pedro Campaign and Francisco Barrera.

It also includes works by Antonio del Castillo y Saavedra, Mateo Cerezo, Francisco de Herrera the Younger, Juan de Valdes Leal, Corrado Giaquinto and Alejandro Loarte.
