The Metropolitan Museum of Arts (MET) claimed to have found a piece of the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian painted by Leonardo Da Vinci and valued at around 15 million euros, as reported by the New York Times.

The MET issued its judgment specialist after studying the drawing submitted by Thaddée Prate, director of ancient art of the auction house Tajan, who in march was presented with a doctor retired with 14 drawings that had been collected by his father.

Between them, to Prate called attention to a study of the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian and decided that it required further investigation. Showed it to Patrick de Bayser, an independent advisor to former painting, who stated that he had been drawn by a left-handed (Da Vinci) and discovered two drawings more on the reverse side of the sheet. It comes from two studies in the light of the candles, which are accompanied by a few handwritten notes, right-to-left.

The work was moved to New York to get a third opinion, specialized, in charge of the curator of Italian painting and Spanish at the MET, Carmen C. Bambach, responsible of the exhibition “Leonardo da Vinci, the teacher of drawing” (2003), a sample that included two studies (one of the German city of Hamburg and the other from Bayonne, in France), of the eight “Saint Sebastian” recorded by Leonardo in his Atlantic Codex.

According to the analysis of the expert, the entire piece as the San Sebastian of Hamburg, with identical handwriting, and studies graphics on the back: “The attribution is pretty undeniable,” he said to the newspaper Bambach.
