They presented in Madrid opera “Der Kaiser von Atlantis” Ullman – Terra Mexico

The Teatro Real in Madrid today announced the start of the opera “Der Kaiser von Atlantis” by Viktor Ullmann, a sarcastic comedy composed in the concentration camp of Terezin in 1943, before its author was sent to Auschwitz.

At a press conference, the artistic team of the Royal Theatre and Mount highlighted the courage of the author, by the librettist Peter Klein, who had the same end as a Jewish prisoner, and the importance this work presented between 10 and 18 June for the first time in Madrid.

Ullmann (1898-1944) in 1943 composed this opera to be imprisoned in the concentration camp of Terezin, with Kein, and both months were taken to the Auschwitz death camp .

The opera, which premiered in 1975 in Amsterdam, incorporates music cabaret, jazz and music banned by the Nazis, to tell the story of an emperor who proclaimed the war of all against all, and ultimately he is facing death.

The artistic director of the Royal Theater, Joan Matabosch, said that it is “a look at the nature of fascism from humor”, while Gustavo Tambascio called it “tremendous satire in humor and sarcasm. ”

He explained that this is how they are represented the characters, reflected in them the Nazi leaders, especially Adolf Hitler, sarcastically, and ultimately face death, which is a character in this book.

The musical director Pedro Halffter said retook other works by Ullmann own to complete parts of this opera, in which he worked for 18 months to have a job, he believes, that the author Polish would have liked.

He said that is a “universal about the courage and freedom” work that goes beyond religion and musically has many references to music of authors who were references to Ullmann.

The adapter opera Kerry Woodward recalled that worked in the late 70s this work, until in 1975 managed to release it in the Dutch capital, and since then has been presented in different stages of the world.

The opera will be presented on 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 June at the Royal Theatre, as a new Spanish actress Blanca Portillo involved in the staging.
