Jury: Led Zeppelin tune copied for ‘Stairway to Heaven’ – The Press

Led Zeppelin stole a riff of a dark instrumental 60 for introducing the classic rock Stairway to Heaven , decided on Thursday June 23 a federal jury in Los Angeles.

The verdict ends a dilemma music lovers debated for decades but only reached the courts two years ago, when the trust of the late musician Randy Craig Wolfe filed a lawsuit for violation of copyright.

the trust alleged that the Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page copied the melody Wolfe, better known as Randy California, wrote to Taurus , a short theme he recorded with his band Spirit in 1968.

Page and singer Robert Plant showed little emotion when the verdict was read and then hugged his lawyers.

jurors found that trust cleared some obstacles, including Page and Plant had “access” to Taurus , which means they would be familiar with the piece.

the lawyer of the trust, Francis Malofiy, said he was sad and disappointed with the jury’s decision.

“the reality is that we show that had access, but they never listened to what they had access “Malofiy said. “It’s weird.”

In an attempt to show that both pieces were substantially similar, the trust had the difficult task of relying on a score because that was what was presented to the Office Federal Copyright.

the jurors did not hear the recording Taurus , which contains a section that sounds very similar to recognizable beginning Stairway .

instead, they heard piano and guitar performances of musicians from both sides in the case. Not surprisingly version of the plaintiffs guitar sound more like Stairway that piano defense. Page and Plant, who wrote the letter Stairway , said their creation was original.
