Broadway lights are dimmed today to mourn Lauren Bacall – La Vanguardia

New York, Aug 14 (EFE) .- The Broadway theater mecca vindicate tonight Lauren Bacall as a great lady of the stage, winning two Tony awards, dimming the lights of the main theaters in mourning.

Although inevitably Lauren Bacall was best known by the general public as one of the legends of Hollywood gold that was next to her first husband, Humphrey Bogart, in the seventies and eighties, when the cinema seemed to have forgotten it, he found an artistic home in his native New York through theater.

“The music has been to me a new opportunity, like being born again,” he once said, and today the community Broadway, two days after his death at 89 years old, at 19.45 local time (23.45 GMT), dim lighting for a minute claim to mourn his absence.

“Lauren Bacall had a distinguished presence on screen and on stage throughout a career that lasted decades, “said in a statement Charlotte St. Martin, executive director of the Broadway League, the organization that awards the Tony awards.

Bacall, who never won an Oscar in competition, won two Tony awards for ironically musical based on the classic Hollywood films: “Applause” (1970), in which he played the character of his admired Bette Davis in “All about Eve”; and “The Woman of the Year” (1981), in which he reprized the role of her friend Katharine Hepburn in the movie of the same title.

In addition, participated in comedy “Goodbye Charlie” (1959 ), “Cactus Flower” (1965) and “Waiting in the Wings” (1999).

Interestingly, before being discovered by Hollywood in “To Have and Have Not” (1944), Howard Hawks and when it was still called Betty Bacall, participated as part of the cast in the play “Johnny 2 x 4″ in 1942, which accounted for two months in New York.
