Begin the restoration of the Bath of Comares Alhambra – Journal of León

The Bath of Comares in the Alhambra, Islamic only medieval conserved almost intact in the West, will be subjected to a restoration process against leaks and moisture in which is the first intervention of scale in this space since the beginning of the century twenty.

The intervention, which the Council of the Alhambra and Generalife expected to start this month’s main purpose is to restore the vaults of the cold, warm and hot room to troubleshoot leaks and moisture from the cover this unique bathroom, which not long ago was known as Bath Real for being reserved for use by the Catholic Monarchs.

According to Francisco Lamolda, conservative architect of the Alhambra and Generalife, it is a ‘complex’ work has a budget of 1,160,000 euros and a completion period of 25 months as initially projected. The complexity of the work lies mainly in the location of the bathroom, located in the “heart” of the Alhambra, hindering access.

Located between the palaces of Comares and Leones, bathroom Comares is usually closed to the public for their conservation status and special nature, although their stays, which can be viewed from other spaces through gaps, can be visited in small groups led by specialists.

So it will remain after the intervention project that will be submitted given the “fragility” of this space, whose origin is at the time of Ismail (around 1314 or 1325), although, as with most places in the Alhambra, then was the subject of reform and adaptation by the sultans, according to the architect. Some of the rooms of these baths such as restroom, here called the Camas Room, have been the subject of interventions.
