Keith Emerson , keyboardist and founder of the progressive rock band Emerson, Lake and Palmer , has died in what could have been a suicide . He was 71.
Mari Kawaguchi , who for years was dating musician, called police to his condominium in the suburb of Santa Monica, on the coast of California, around 1:30 am
Emerson had a gunshot wound to the head , apparently made by himself.
Possible suicide
“is being investigated as a suicide,” said sergeant Erika Aklufi.
Kawaguchi told police that Emerson might have died between Thursday night and Friday morning.
“Keith was a gentle soul whose love for music and passion for his performance as a keyboardist remain unsurpassed for many years,” said his former teammate band and drummer Carl Palmer in a statement.
“He was a pioneer and innovator whose musical genius touched us all in the world of rock, classical music and jazz. will always remember him by her warm smile, good sense of humor, his quality as an artist exciting and dedication to his musical work. I had the great fortune to have known him and having made the music we made together. ”
The music always in your head
Kawaguchi said Emerson could compose without any instrument.
“It was natural. The music was always in his head, always,” he said. “Even when he was asleep, I knew I was always thinking about music. Sometimes he woke and composed something. And that was so beautiful.”
Emerson, Palmer and vocalist and guitarist Greg Lake were giants Progressive rock in the 1970s, which recorded six albums reached platinum certification for its high sales.
Along with other groups such as Pink Floyd, Moody Blues and Genesis distanced emphasis rock on short songs with danceable rhythms to create albums with pieces full chords complicated and intricate rhythms. The orchestrations were inspired by classical and jazz styles, while sometimes joined traditional rock instruments with full orchestras.

Emerson was born in Todmorden, England. While still a teenager playing in jazz and blues clubs in London. He helped form one of the first groups of progressive rock, The Nice , before joining Lake and Palmer in 1970 and debuted with them on the Isle of Wight Festival, which was also Jimi Hendrix and The Who.
Although Emerson Lake and Palmer (ELP) filled stadiums, was also derided for its lavishness and complacency, which were allegedly contrary to the rock. When the punk movement began in the mid-1970s the band was one of the main objectives of criticism, openly signaled by musicians as Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols.
Years later Rotten and Emerson became friends recounted punk rocker whose real name is John Lydon, the News of the World in 2007.
There was a rock star
despite its influence, Emerson never one rock or pop icon, and his true musical devotion was another considered side.
“At home listening to classical music or jazz, rock never listened,” Kawaguchi said.
“I hated being called rock star or progressive star … wanted to be known as a composer ” he said. “He never succumbed to being commercially successful. I had no interest. He always said ‘I’m not a rock star. I’ve never been a rock star. All I want is to play music.’ ”
